Another week, another Dexter. Last weeks episode "A Horse Of A Different Color" was quite frankly one of my favorite episodes of the entire series and coming into episode 5 "The Angel Of Death" I had very high expectations for this fantastic show. Once again expectations were met!
The episode starts off with Dex in the lab investigating the wings of our last victim from episode 4. Dex in the lab doing his thing inspecting the angel wings was a solid start to get the ball rolling, I was upset that the episode didn't resume at last weeks ending crime scene, but the lab scene made due. Its also worth noting that I think Michael C Hall definitely deserves more credit than he's been given because he is still giving his all as our Dark Defender with brilliant performance.
Our next scene brings us to Travis (Colin Hanks) and Professor Gellar (Edward James Olmos) discussing there next kill. The chemistry between the two is fantastic, and I enjoy how Travis feels the need to impress Gellar and stick by him, not an easy task as we have seen what the phsycopath is capable of doing. Gellar is one of the weirdest yet best characters on the show in my opinion. He is a smart man and a strong manipulator and I'm glad that he has stayed true to character and seems one sided. This shows true passion towards his killings/beliefs which makes him all the more scarier. Another thing to point out, although it may have been unintentional, I enjoy the writers adding another "guide" character. Similar to how Harry guides Dex. The fact that Travis needed Gellar to capture their latest victim says something about the two, and it makes them one of my favorite Dexter killers to date.
Quinn (Desmond Harrington) and Batista (David Zayas) felt a little underused yet again in this episode as they are sent to go interrogate one of Gellar's ex assistants. The story gives Quinn a chance to show his moves with the ladys but is mainly used for Batista finding some of Gellar's old books showcasing handdrawn pictures that look very similar to the murders. Quinn getting with the girl was nothing special as she wasn't that good of an actor and will most likely be tossed aside after this episode now that her job is done.
To me the highlight of the episode was Deb yet again. Besides season 1, Debra has always been the same gorgeous, smart thinking, foul mouthed detective. Not really changing just having new emotional/physical relationships. In this season with Debs new job she has become overwhelmed with everything and its starting to show. Jennifer Carpenter is still phenomenal if not better in this season as she easily proves to be one of the best female actors on TV.
Masuka's new assistant Louis Greene (Josh Cooke) was introduced this episode, a smart witty computer genius, Louis looks like he will fit in well aiding Masuka. He also got rid of all the evidence about the missing Ice Truck Killer hand, something that can now be put to bed as I doubt the writers will bring it up again.
Mos Def is still blowing my mind as Brother Sam because once again I believe he stole every scene he was in. Brother Sam is a smart, kind, and compelling character so its nice to see him interact with Dexter especially during their buddy buddy hangout. As stubborn as Dexter is, Brother Sam has been the only character to make Dexter think about religion and god, and the chemistry between them is fantastic.
It was also nice to see Dexter in detective mode as he learns the identity of Travis. With no Dexter kill for two weeks its nice to see that the writers haven't forgotten that Dex is a bloodthirsty killer and although I wasn't happy with how Dexter and Travis interacted in the car scene, I'm holding back as I know they will meet again. I just felt that Dexter has always been a man doing everything carefully and for him to let Travis go after he saw his face and without thought. It seemed to quick. Either Brother Sam has really influenced Dexter or the writers got a bit lazy.
The last great thing from this episode was the ending. Dexter is show that is always chopped full of fantastic cliff hanger endings and this weeks episode continued that tradition having Brother Sam gunned down inside his shop. WTF! I was totally taken by surprise with this but its a lesson one has to learn with Dexter, anything can happen.
One scene I didn't like was Deb and Jamie (Aimee Garcia) getting into there little fight. Little drama has been dwelling over them this season so I found it a bit dumb that they would get into an argument so quickly. I do understand however because this scene is also the nail in the coffin that makes Deb get her own place.
The other dry scene was Dex being called to a homicide by the new detective Anderson (Billy Brown) which ironically takes place at the apartment Deb decides to live in. A scene with just Anderson and Dex just felt lacking as most crime scenes we are used to the whole Miami Metro gang being there. It was still nice to see Dexter solve the crime in record timing and once again it was necessary for Debs new home storyline but it just lacked substance.
"The Angel Of Death" continues this seasons strong performance, keeping us on our toes and leaving us anxious for more. Great job
9/10
