Dexter Season 6 Ep 4 Review

Its September and for most that just means back to school, but to me it means another season of Dexter. Being a fan of the show for a couple years now I was excited to see what the writers have come up with for us again this year. Season 6 has been getting better and better with each episode and this week we were treated to one of the darkest and best episodes of Dexter ever!
"A Horse Of A Different Color" started off with a thing of twisted beauty, the one the producers have been hinting at for a few weeks now, and that is the Horsemen Of The Apocalypse scene, and boy did it deliver. It was nice to see that even Dexter can notice and shrug at something that fucked beyond belief, it also showed us that he's not all "Dark Passenger". The opening scene had a very entertaining Deb as she directed her first crime scene as Lieutenant. It's also worth noting the pattern that the writers are starting to turning Quinn into the "dedicated asshole" of the show.
The episode rolls on with a nice scene with Dex analyzing the killers techniques, showing off not only his skill at his job but also his connection with Deb. It was also nice to see him and Deb make reference to The Ice Truck Killer (Dex's brother).
The storyline of Harrison getting sick was a little lame but it was a nice way of showing Dexter when he's emotionally hurt without being too corny. Also nice to see Brother Sam pop in there because Mos is simply killing it in every scene he's in! this also brought the first scene where Dexter actually looked to God for help. When I first heard that the killers were going to be religious fanatics I thought it was going to be boring and lame, but the fact that religion is incorporated to almost all of the story lines gives it a stronger sense of emotion. especially when delivered by Michael C Hall.
And speaking of twisted phsyco religious fanatics Travis (Colin Hanks) and James Gellar (Edward James Olmos) who are just fantastic together, especially during the scene of the morning after Travis' date.
Quinn and Batista weren't really used during this episode besides their little Cheech and Chong moment in Batista's Firebird. It was amusing yes, but I did feel it was out of place/not needed.
Debs press scene and her talk with Deputy Chief Mathews was good for her character growth, as now Deb is finally feeling good about her new promotion and taking charge.
This brings me to the final scene where Dexter and Miami Metro arrive on The Doomsday Killer's latest masterpiece. Looking straight out of a Saw movie, this new inventive kill trap was like nothing we've ever seen on Dexter. Actually making me cringe my teeth together, I grinned as it satisfied my bloodlust. Ps nice ending with the locusts ;)
Yes you can already tell I'm a fan of this episode but I will say, it did have weaknesses. I'm still not liking Mike Anderson(Billy Brown) as the new Metro Detective. He seems dull and uninteresting, although I could definitely see the writers throwing him in as Debs love interest. And as I said before, the Quinn/Batista story was just not needed.
The final thing to point out is that there wasn't a "Dexter Kill" this episode. It was something that most Dex fans have gotten used to but to be honest I barely missed it. This episode kept raising the suspense and playing with Dexter's and our own emotions. The only thing left to say is to quote Deputy Chief Mathews and say "Keep up the good fucking work!"
9.4/10
